My Entrepreneur Journey
Long before I became an attorney and opened my own practice, I was an entrepreneur and business owner.
In fact, as long as I can remember that’s been the case.
From running my first lemonade stand when I was 8 years old, to a car buying business and kickboxing studio opened in my late teens and early twenties, I have always been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug.
And like most serial entrepreneurs, I failed. A lot. As a guy barely out of high school I was juggling too many businesses at once and more then I could handle!
And here is the thing. If it was just me I had to worry about it would have been fine.
But I had two young kids and my (ex) wife at the time was picking up most of the slack for my failed business while I was still hoping to hit that right track.
Well finally after lots of attention and learning from my mistakes one of my businesses began to thrive.
The money was coming in steadily, the business was growing and I could come home and have dinner with my family without feeling like a failure.
An Expensive Lesson
Well after about 6 months the business was going great and I even hired some employees. I was feeling pretty good about myself being so young with a growing company and my own employees.
But I quickly found out that having employees comes with some major risk. One of these employees (ironically one I had befriended) had filed a false claim against me and this business that I worked so hard to get to where it was.
I’ll never forget the pit in my stomach when I got that first call from his lawyer.
Because I was a young and inexperienced business owner and not at all prepared for something like this I got my butt kicked good.
I lost a ridiculous claim that had very little merit.
I was going through a time where my business was growing… I ran the company… and I had NO IDEA how to mitigate my risk against these types of employee issues. I did not get the services of an attorney because I thought I could handle it myself but the situation clearly did not work out in my favor.
And on top of all that I not only lost my business but went almost broke trying to pay all the legal and penalty costs!
That was a hard time having to go back to my family and tell them I was starting all over again.
A New Path
But you know what? After all the bad things that just happened. Losing my business, letting down my family again and almost going broke there was one thing in particular stood out to me.
It was that feeling of being paralyzed with fear when that attorney contacted me.
I felt absolutely helpless and its something I couldn’t stop thinking about. I knew it was something I never wanted to feel again.
One night I was talking to one of my best friends about it and he said something that changed the path of my career and life. He said , “If you never want to feel that fear from an attorney again just become an attorney yourself.”
He was right! I knew right then I would do what ever it takes to become a lawyer and I would pick up my entrepreneur journey again afterwards.
And when I did become a lawyer my first priority would be to protect my companies and never feel like a victim again.
Law Career
After graduating from law school in Los Angeles. I established my own law firm and since its inception we have helped employers, business owners, and entrepreneurs. In the beginning we mostly focused on legal contracts and business formations.
But over the years I would see that some of these business owners were dealing with the same risks and problems from employee related claims that I had in my own company many years earlier!
That’s when it hit me!
The more I saw the risks to my clients business from employee related claims the more I realized that I needed to help protect their interests using the same methods I use to protect my own multiple business interests!
